Exploring Southern China: A September Journey
In September, I embarked on a journey across southern China, visiting a diverse range of cities and landscapes.
My adventure began with an 11-hour direct flight from the UK to Chengdu, the vibrant capital of Sichuan Province. Chengdu is renowned for its Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, now home to Hau Hau, one of the centre’s most beloved pandas. While in the region, I also explored the awe-inspiring Giant Buddha in Leshan and enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere of Chengdu People’s Park.
From Chengdu, I took a short flight to Shenzhen—often referred to as China’s Silicon Valley. This dynamic city is a major tech hub and serves as a gateway to nearby Hong Kong.
After a few days immersed in urban energy, I sought a change of pace and headed to the countryside. A high-speed train brought me to Yangshuo, a town famous for its dramatic karst mountain scenery. Here, I witnessed traditional river fishing using cormorants and drifted peacefully along on bamboo rafts on the Li River.
My final stop was Hangzhou, a city steeped in cultural heritage. I visited the National Tea Museum and strolled around the iconic West Lake, where ancient pagodas rise gracefully along the shoreline.
